Riverside County – Authorities recovered 37 vulnerable youths aged 14 to 17 during a targeted operation against human trafficking last week.[1][2]
Operation Safe Return Delivers Major Wins
From March 2 to 6, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force joined forces with the U.S. Marshals Service to locate more than 50 at-risk missing children listed in the National Crime Information Center database.[1] Investigators focused on teens absent from home for one to 24 months, many of whom faced heightened risks of exploitation.
The five-day push recovered all 37 targeted youths, with some discovered across Southern California counties, northern California, Arizona, and Nevada.[3] Officials noted that several had endured child sex trafficking or sexual assault, underscoring the operation’s urgency.[2]
Arrests Target Exploiters
Law enforcement made seven arrests during the sweep, including a federal charge for child sex trafficking handled by Homeland Security Investigations.[1] Details on the suspects remained limited as probes continued.
Each recovered child received immediate victim advocacy, medical evaluations where needed, and follow-up resources before reuniting with legal guardians.[1] This support aimed to address trauma and prevent future vulnerabilities.
Governor Gavin Newsom praised the outcome, stating, “I’m grateful to our law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to locate these missing children, support survivors of trafficking, and hold those responsible for harming our kids accountable.”[4]
The Scale of Missing Youths in Riverside
Riverside County spans 7,303 square miles and serves over 2.5 million residents, where 5,000 to 6,000 children run away or go missing annually.[1] Most return quickly, but longer absences often signal deeper perils like trafficking.
Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized the stakes: “Through close collaboration between state and federal authorities, we were able to identify, locate, and safely recover 37 vulnerable children while holding those responsible for their exploitation accountable.”[4]
