Chennai, April 27 – Johnson Lifts Private Limited, India’s leading elevator and escalator manufacturer, announced it has boosted its ownership in the Toshiba Johnson Elevators joint venture to more than 80 percent. This move positions the Chennai-based firm as the majority shareholder after 14 years of collaboration with Japan’s Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems Corporation. The restructuring aims to capitalize on India’s rapid growth in vertical mobility solutions.[1]

Origins of a Key Industry Partnership

Johnson Lifts entered the joint venture in 2012 to address gaps in high-speed elevator technology. Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems Corporation held a majority stake initially, while Johnson Lifts contributed its strong local market presence. The partnership formed Toshiba Johnson Elevators (India) Private Limited, targeting premium segments with Japanese engineering standards.[2]

Over the years, the venture secured contracts for hundreds of units across commercial and residential projects. Johnson Lifts, founded in 1963, brought decades of experience in installation and maintenance, complementing Toshiba’s innovation. This alliance helped both firms navigate India’s expanding urban infrastructure demands.[2]

Terms of the Majority Stake Shift

Johnson Lifts previously maintained a minority position in the venture. The company raised its equity to over 80 percent, with Toshiba retaining a strategic minority role. No financial details of the transaction surfaced in the announcement, but the change hands full operational control to Johnson Lifts while preserving Toshiba’s technical input.[1]

Toshiba Johnson Elevators will assume all prior business duties, including sales, installation, maintenance, and customer service for Toshiba-branded products. Toshiba continues supplying components and support to ensure seamless quality. The board now features a majority of Johnson Lifts representatives, including senior leaders, though day-to-day operations face no disruptions.[1]

Key Changes at a Glance:

  • Ownership: Johnson Lifts >80% (from minority)
  • Toshiba Role: Strategic partner, tech support
  • Operations: No changes to staff, projects, or commitments
  • Exclusivity: TJEI remains sole Toshiba partner in India

Strengthening Market Dominance

The combined operations of Johnson Lifts and Toshiba Johnson Elevators command 20 percent of India’s elevator market and 30 percent of the escalator sector. Johnson Lifts alone reports annual turnover exceeding Rs 4,000 crore, underscoring its scale as the nation’s top producer. This deal fortifies their hold on premium, high-speed systems amid urbanization.[1]

India ranks as the world’s second-fastest growing market for elevators and escalators. The Japanese-branded segment alone exceeds 5,000 units yearly, with Toshiba Johnson Elevators eyeing 20 percent expansion. Stakeholders benefit from blended strengths: Toshiba’s precision engineering paired with Johnson Lifts’ nationwide network and customer ties.[1]

Yohan K John, director at Johnson Lifts, highlighted the synergy. “With JLPL assuming majority ownership, TJEI enters a new phase of growth, combining Toshiba’s technological excellence… with our India market expertise,” he said.

Leadership and Path Forward

Wilfred Clarence Martin stays on as managing director of Toshiba Johnson Elevators, guiding the firm toward deeper penetration in the premium niche. “The company now targets… strengthening sales and service capabilities and enhancing customer engagement,” Martin noted, aiming to lead Japanese brands in India.

Employees, ongoing projects, and client obligations remain untouched, prioritizing stability. The partnership evolves to accelerate expansion in a market ripe for high-end mobility solutions. Johnson Lifts’ control promises swifter adaptation to local demands while upholding global standards.[1]
