Garland, Texas – A harrowing confrontation unfolded in a shopping center parking lot on May 3 when a father shot and killed a man who tried to drive away in his vehicle with family members still inside. The incident followed a nearby crash and a series of erratic carjacking attempts, leaving the suspect dead at the scene. Police quickly classified the father’s actions as self-defense, ensuring no charges against him.[1][2]

The Rampage Begins Near Highway 66

Officers responded to a crash around 3:30 p.m. along Highway 66 near Dairy Road. A green vehicle struck two other cars, prompting all drivers to pull over at a nearby gas station.[2] The driver of the green car then abandoned his vehicle and began aggressively trying to enter other parked cars in the lot.

Witnesses described the man as acting erratically. He checked door handles, forced his way into at least one vehicle, but failed to drive away in any of them.[3] From there, he crossed the street to a convenience store parking lot, where surveillance cameras captured his next move.

Tatiana Starks, manager of the nearby Garland Smoke and Vape shop, observed the suspect’s behavior firsthand. “You could definitely tell that he was not in his right state of mind,” she said. She noted how he targeted several cars before zeroing in on a white Chevrolet Impala that had just pulled in.[1]

Struggle Erupts at the Family Vehicle

The Impala carried a family of eight: the father behind the wheel, two adult women, and five children. As the father began to exit, the suspect in the peach-colored shirt approached the driver’s side and raised his arm in what appeared to be a threatening gesture.[2] The father, dressed in a white shirt, immediately drew a handgun and confronted the intruder.

A physical struggle ensued outside the car. The suspect managed to slide into the driver’s seat and attempted to shift the vehicle into gear. Meanwhile, the women and children scrambled out, with one young boy running for cover.[4]

The father circled to the passenger side during the nearly minute-long altercation. He then fired multiple rounds – more than 10 according to some accounts – striking the suspect and halting the attempted theft.[4] The family escaped unharmed, a fact that drew relief from onlookers.

“It’s just a blessing that the kids and the family walked away with no injuries.”

Police Investigation Confirms Self-Defense

Garland Police arrived shortly after the gunfire. The father remained at the scene, cooperated fully, and surrendered his weapon to investigators.[3] No weapons were found on the suspect, whose identity has not yet been released pending family notification.

Lt. Pedro Barineau of the Garland Police Department outlined the sequence of events. “He crashed into two vehicles, parked in a gas station, and immediately began trying to force his way into other vehicles,” Barineau explained. “That driver was defending himself and was fighting with that suspect. The car was occupied by several children as well as two other female adults.”[4]

Authorities reviewed surveillance footage from a nearby business, which showed the entire confrontation. “It seemed to be self-defense. It kind of all happened like really fast,” Barineau added. The case involves three related incidents – the crash, gas station attempts, and the fatal shooting – but police do not anticipate filing charges against the father.[1]

  • Suspect crashed green vehicle into two cars on Highway 66.
  • Failed carjacking attempts at gas station.
  • Final confrontation in convenience store lot.
  • Father fired after family evacuated vehicle.

Witnesses Reflect on Split-Second Decisions

Local resident Taylor Stanfield, who has three young children, watched part of the chaos unfold. “I have three kids. I’m gonna do whatever it takes to keep them safe. That kind of stuff is split-second,” he said.[4] Stanfield emphasized the adrenaline involved in such situations, especially with vulnerable passengers nearby.

Starks echoed the sentiment after reviewing her own cellphone footage. “I’m just glad that the man was able to protect himself and his family,” she stated. The quick resolution prevented what could have been a far more dangerous chase with children aboard.[1]

Investigators continue to probe the suspect’s motives and any underlying factors behind his actions. For now, the focus remains on the father’s successful defense of his loved ones amid a sudden threat.

The episode serves as a stark reminder of how rapidly everyday errands can turn perilous, particularly in public spaces. Garland authorities urged vigilance while affirming that justified responses to imminent danger will be supported.
