Tampa, Fla. – A Hillsborough County jury has convicted four men of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the June 2024 shooting death of rapper Charles Jones, known professionally as Julio Foolio. The verdicts came after a multi-week trial that detailed a coordinated ambush tied to a long-running gang conflict between Jacksonville groups. The same jury will return Monday to begin the penalty phase, where prosecutors will seek death sentences for each defendant.
The Verdicts and Immediate Next Steps
Isaiah Chance, 23, Sean Gathright, 20, Rashad Murphy, 32, and Davion Murphy, 29, each received guilty findings on the two primary charges. All four men now face the possibility of execution if the jury recommends death during the upcoming penalty proceedings. The panel deliberated more than seven hours before returning its decision on the final day of testimony. The convictions follow the earlier guilty plea of Alicia Andrews, Chance’s girlfriend, who was convicted for her role in scouting locations ahead of the attack. Prosecutors described the operation as a premeditated effort in which the group traveled together from Jacksonville, tracked Jones to a Tampa hotel, and opened fire on vehicles associated with him.
The Night of the Shooting
Jones was celebrating his 26th birthday in Tampa when the attack occurred at a Home 2 Suites hotel. Surveillance footage captured masked gunmen exiting vehicles and firing dozens of rounds into a black Dodge Charger and surrounding cars. Jones suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including a fatal shot to the chest, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people were injured. Investigators determined the gunmen were Gathright, Rashad Murphy, and Davion Murphy, while Chance and Andrews served as lookouts. The group had booked an Airbnb nearby and fled the area shortly after the shooting. Cellphone records, social media posts, and hotel surveillance helped prosecutors establish the timeline and movements of the defendants.
Rooted in Jacksonville Gang Rivalry
Prosecutors tied the killing to an ongoing feud between Jones’s gang, 6 Block, and rival factions ATK and 1200. The four convicted men were documented members of one of the rival groups. Evidence presented at trial included Instagram exchanges, text messages, and drill rap videos that prosecutors said reflected escalating tensions in the months before the murder. Defense attorneys countered that some social media content was ambiguous and that not every defendant could be placed at the Tampa scene through direct evidence. They also highlighted gaps in forensic links, such as the absence of certain DNA matches on recovered clothing or weapons.
Defense Testimony and Mitigation
During the guilt phase, family members and mental health experts testified on behalf of the defendants. Witnesses described Chance as quiet and protective of his family, with an IQ score below average and a history of learning challenges. Gathright’s relatives portrayed him as a once-promising student and athlete who became involved at a young age. Experts for Davion Murphy noted learning disabilities and multiple school changes, while Rashad Murphy’s fiancée spoke of his role as a father to four children. The jury rejected those arguments when it returned its guilty verdicts. The focus now shifts to the penalty phase, where the same panel will weigh aggravating and mitigating factors before deciding whether to recommend life sentences or death. The case has drawn attention across the music industry because of Jones’s rising profile and the public nature of the gang-related dispute. Sentencing proceedings are expected to continue into the coming weeks.
