North Fort Myers, Florida – A 28-year-old mother was arrested Thursday on child neglect charges after her 5-year-old autistic son was found wandering alone and unclothed along a residential roadway. Authorities say the boy had been left unsupervised for roughly eight hours while his mother worked a shift at an assisted living facility in nearby Cape Coral. The incident unfolded Wednesday when neighbors on Caterina Court spotted the child near the street. They contacted authorities after seeing him attempt to eat Styrofoam in a garage and appear severely dehydrated. Deputies and fire rescue personnel responded to conduct a welfare check and confirmed no adults were present at the home.
Neighbors Sound the Alarm
Residents in the townhome complex acted quickly once they realized the boy was on his own. One neighbor provided the child with apple juice after noticing his condition. Others expressed immediate concern over the surrounding ponds that lack gates or fences, noting how easily a young child could wander into danger. The swift response from neighbors prevented what could have been a far worse outcome. Deputies later released body camera footage showing an officer trying to comfort the boy by asking his name. A bystander captured on the recording questioned the mother’s priorities during the investigation, asking why she was focused on her driver’s license instead of her child.
Mother Relied on Doorbell Camera
Investigators located Yvana Miller at her workplace and interviewed her there. She admitted to leaving the boy alone for the full shift and said she had been watching him remotely through a doorbell camera placed inside the home. Miller described the setup as her way of monitoring his well-being while she worked. Sheriff Carmine Marceno issued a direct statement on the case. “You cannot leave a child home alone for hours and expect technology to replace responsible parenting,” he said. “This innocent child was found sitting outside alone near the roadway, completely unsupervised.”
Sparse Home Conditions Raise Concerns
Deputies described the residence as having little furniture, minimal food, and no running water. The conditions added to the seriousness of the neglect allegation under Florida law, where child neglect is classified as a third-degree felony carrying up to five years in prison. Emergency medical personnel evaluated the boy at the scene before releasing him into the care of a family member. The child is now safe with relatives while the case moves forward.
Case Moves to Court
Miller was booked into the Lee County Jail. Her bond had not been set as of Friday morning, and it remains unclear when she will appear in court. Neighbors voiced relief that the situation ended without tragedy, though they noted how close the boy came to serious harm in the unsecured complex. The arrest highlights the risks of relying solely on remote monitoring for young children with special needs. Authorities continue to emphasize that no device can substitute for direct adult supervision in such situations.
