The New York Mets extended their recent surge with a dramatic extra-inning victory over the Washington Nationals. A 10-run outburst in the 12th inning turned a tense contest into a decisive 16-7 win on Monday night. The result underscored New York’s growing comfort in prolonged games while exposing Washington’s persistent struggles with execution and baserunning.

Record-Setting Rally in the 12th

Carson Benge delivered the decisive blows for the Mets, starting the inning with an infield single and later adding a two-run double. His contributions helped New York become the first National League team since the 1919 Cincinnati Reds to score at least 10 runs in an extra inning. The sequence began after Paxton Schultz retired the first batter on a sacrifice bunt, only for the next six hitters to reach base safely. Vidal Bruján followed with a bunt single that loaded the bases and scored Benge. Brett Baty then drove in two more runs with a single, and Marcus Semien added an RBI single to push the lead to 11-6. The inning continued to unravel for Washington when the team shifted infielder Jorbit Vivas to the mound and moved designated hitter José Tena into the field. A.J. Ewing and Benge each collected additional hits off Vivas to complete the scoring.

Nationals Leave Opportunities Behind

Washington stranded 19 runners on base and committed four errors, yet the game remained close until the 12th. The Nationals tied the score in the 11th on an RBI infield single by Joey Wiemer after New York had taken a brief lead. A double by Vivas placed runners in scoring position with two outs, but the team could not capitalize. Earlier, Washington had chipped away at a 5-3 Mets advantage with runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Both clubs added a run apiece in the 11th before the decisive frame. The combination of defensive miscues and missed chances ultimately proved too costly against a Mets lineup that refused to fade.

Mets Maintain Extra-Inning Edge

New York improved to 6-4 in extra-inning games this season, the highest total for any major league club. The Mets have now won six of their last seven overall, with three of those victories coming in extra innings. Benge has provided the go-ahead hit in each of those extra-inning triumphs. Baty and Bo Bichette each homered for New York, including Baty’s 451-foot drive in the fourth that cleared the center-field fence. Huascar Brazobán earned the win after navigating a bases-loaded jam in the 10th and limiting further damage in the 11th. Schultz took the loss in his 27th big-league appearance.
