Mountain Home, Arkansas – A local couple has been ordered to serve 20 years in prison each after admitting they repeatedly locked the woman’s 15-year-old son naked inside a dark bathroom without food or clothing. The only times the boy was allowed out were for school. Prosecutors described the prolonged mistreatment as one of the most disturbing cases they have handled in years.
The sentencing came after the pair pleaded guilty to a range of serious felonies. Court records show the judge also imposed a seven-year suspended sentence on top of the prison term and credited both defendants with 194 days already served.
Discovery of the Locked Bathroom
Police responded to the family’s apartment on November 2, 2024, after a downstairs neighbor reported hearing what sounded like a child crying for help. Officers found the boy inside the master bathroom, secured by a ratchet strap attached from a bedpost to the door handle. He had no clothes, had not eaten, and initially refused to come out because he was embarrassed.
Investigators learned the boy had been confined this way on a regular basis. He slept on a wooden pallet in the bathroom while the other two children in the home used bunk beds. The boy told officers he was only released to attend school and was then locked back inside each evening.
Charges Built on Daily School Records
Authorities filed 112 counts of endangering the welfare of a minor alone, basing the number on the days the boy attended school in 2024. Lead investigator Mike Day explained that the pattern of confinement was confirmed through the child’s forensic interview and the physical evidence at the scene.
Both defendants initially claimed they had no idea why the boy was naked in the bathroom and blamed the younger children. When officers asked the 10- and 11-year-olds to demonstrate how the ratchet strap worked, neither could do it. The couple then changed their account, saying the strap was only used to keep the door closed because of a leaky faucet.
Prosecutor and Judge Address the Case
During the hearing, Baxter County Prosecuting Attorney David Ethredge called the abuse “horrific.” He noted that the children had been “abused, manipulated, and exploited” for years instead of receiving the love and protection they needed.
Judge Andrew Bailey described the day as a “sad day for our city and our state.” He pointed out that the case had already prompted a broader statewide review of how the Department of Human Services handles repeated reports of possible child mistreatment. At least 29 calls about the victim had been made since 2013.
Outcome and Next Steps
The couple had been facing more than 100 charges total and were set to go to trial this week before entering their guilty pleas. Each now faces two decades in a state correctional facility.
The case has drawn attention to gaps in child welfare oversight and the importance of neighbors and schools speaking up when something seems wrong. Authorities continue to monitor the other children in the home as the legal process concludes.
