The sharpest rises appeared in practical applications rather than core development. AI video and content creation skills leaped 329%, AI integration into business processes climbed 178%, and AI data annotation grew 154%. Employers now prioritize workers who embed AI into daily operations, blending tech savvy with domain expertise. This shift reflects a maturing understanding of AI’s role as an enhancer, not a standalone solution.

Human Skills Emerge as Essential Partners

Nearly half of business leaders emphasized soft skills like creativity, emotional intelligence, resilience, and innovation alongside AI tools.

Dr. Gabby Burlacu, Upwork’s senior research manager, noted that demand favors AI application within specific contexts over generalist builders. “What is interesting is that this is not growing demand for AI generalists… but rather it’s growing demand for AI applied within a context,” she said. Studies, including one from Brookings, indicate AI augments rather than eliminates jobs, elevating irreplaceable human traits. Learning agility and adaptability topped lists of critical competencies in an AI-driven landscape.

Businesses historically adopted a wait-and-see stance after disruptive AI releases, assessing capabilities before ramping up recruitment.

That caution lifted as firms clarified AI’s strengths and limits. Dr. Burlacu explained that AI reshapes existing roles through augmentation. A McKinsey analysis, titled “Agents, robots, and us: Skill partnerships in the age of AI,” reviewed 7,000 job skills and found 70% benefit from tech enhancement while relying on human input.

Coauthor Anu Madgavkar highlighted collaboration: “If we can use AI as an assistant or a collaborator… then our own ability to use that skill and deploy it will be enhanced.” Workday’s “Elevating Human Potential: The AI Skills Revolution” report revealed 83% of employees credit AI for faster skill acquisition.
