Berkeley Township, N.J. – A peaceful early morning shattered into violence when an estranged father entered a family home and fatally shot his former partner along with her parents before turning the gun on himself.[1][2]
The Rampage Unfolds at Dawn
Police responded to reports of gunfire around 5 a.m. Tuesday on Fairwood Drive. Officers arrived to find a chaotic scene at the residence owned by the victims’ parents. The Ocean County Regional SWAT team entered the home and discovered two bodies suffering from gunshot wounds to the head.
Investigators later pieced together the sequence. Vaughn Stewart, 37, from Maplewood, forced his way inside. He shot Allan Russell, 61, and Michelle Russell, 60, before pursuing Deonna Stewart, 38, down the street about 50 yards. Multiple shots struck her fatally. Stewart then returned to the house and inflicted a self-inflicted wound, dying later at Community Medical Center in Toms River.[3]
A Family Torn Apart
Deonna Stewart shared three young children with Vaughn, though the couple had separated. She had moved into the Fairwood Drive home with the children and her parents. The youngsters remained physically unharmed amid the horror and were quickly placed in the care of the Department of Child Protection and Permanency.
No prior reports of domestic issues surfaced publicly. Authorities described the incident as a targeted family tragedy with no broader threat to the community. The children now face an uncertain future without their mother and grandparents.[2]
Community Mourns Beloved Neighbors
Residents remembered Allan and Michelle Russell as a devoted, churchgoing couple known for their kindness. James Casella, 41, who lived directly behind the home, praised them highly. “They were truly great, great people,” he said. The pair once gifted backpacks to his three children and regularly waved hello.[1]
Other neighbors witnessed the terror. Jay Bisogno saw Deonna flee the house with Stewart in pursuit. A bullet even struck Casella’s property, heightening the shock in the leafy suburb. Jacqueline Britton, 79, called the event stunning for the area.
