Discord’s Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy addressed the outcry directly in a blog post published on Tuesday. He acknowledged that the initial plan had “missed the mark” and drew skepticism from users wary of tech companies collecting personal data.
Vishnevskiy emphasized that Discord aimed to enhance safety without invasive measures. The company, home to over 200 million active users primarily gamers, faced immediate criticism following its early February announcement. Many users highlighted a recent security incident involving a third-party provider that exposed government ID photos of up to 70,000 accounts. Discord confirmed it severed ties with that vendor and now enforces strict partner reviews.
Flaws in Early Vendor Choices Exposed
One key vendor, Persona, failed Discord’s standards during a limited UK test in January. The service could not perform facial age estimation entirely on-device, a requirement to keep biometric data local. Persona also drew scrutiny due to backing from Founders Fund, led by Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel, whose firm faces criticism for government surveillance ties.
Discord ended the partnership promptly. Vishnevskiy noted that every vendor undergoes security audits, data use limits, and deletion protocols before integration. Information for verification gets deleted immediately in most cases, he added.
New Approach for Age Determination
For over 90% of users, Discord already estimates age through account signals without accessing messages or content. These include account age, payment methods on file, server types joined, and activity patterns.
The revised system will expand options beyond face scans or ID uploads. Credit card verification now joins the list to accommodate more users. Those opting out retain full access to accounts, servers, friends, messages, and voice chats but lose age-restricted content and certain safety settings.
