Karen Pflug, chief sustainability officer for Ingka Group, noted the strategic fit. “We’ve always had a focus on creating value for money for customers, and this strengthens our low-price offer,” she said.

Research indicated that affordability remained a hurdle for some buyers, even with Ikea’s pricing. Secondhand options addressed this gap effectively. The program tapped into existing trends, as Ikea items already claimed about 9% of Europe’s secondhand furniture market.

Far from undermining fresh inventory, the buyback drew budget-minded newcomers. Returners often spent beyond their store credit value on additional purchases. Ditze observed this pattern firsthand. “When a customer comes and successfully has a buyback resale transaction, has a store credit in their hand, they are likely thinking about what their next purchase is going to be,” she explained.

Same-day spending proved common, turning returns into immediate revenue boosts. This dynamic underscored the program’s dual role in retention and acquisition.

Innovations Ease Peer Reselling

Ikea extended options beyond store buybacks with peer-to-peer platforms in select countries. Users scanned items via the app for instant pricing, descriptions, measurements, assembly guides, and photos. Sellers received cash or a 15% digital refund card.

Plans called for further rollout this year, as detailed in an Ingka Group announcement. These tools reduced hassles compared to platforms like eBay.
