Every winter, something magical happens in Minnesota. As temperatures drop and snow begins to blanket the landscape, nearly 20 ice artisans begin the painstaking process of building the Ice Castles, growing, harvesting, and hand-placing icicles one by one. After years in locations from New Brighton to Excelsior and most recently Maple Grove, the Ice Castles have found their new home at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds for winter 2025. This spectacular winter attraction features tunnels, caverns, towers, fountains, and slides, all built entirely from ice. The acre-sized frozen playground transforms into a glowing spectacle at night, illuminated by color-changing LED lights embedded directly inside the ice.

It takes a team of 20 to 40 ice artisans working for two months to construct a single castle, but the process itself is unlike anything you’d expect. Rather than simply cutting blocks of ice, the builders actually grow between 5,000 and 12,000 icicles for each installation. Ice artisans can harvest and place up to 10,000 icicles each day during peak construction. These icicles are then harvested by hand and individually sculpted into existing ice formations, with newly placed icicles being drenched with water in a continuous process.

Ice Castles began as a father’s snowy experiment to entertain his kids, evolving into a beloved winter phenomenon since 2011 when founder Brent Christensen started spreading happiness, one icicle at a time. The attraction has grown to five locations across North America, including Utah, New Hampshire, and both Eagle and Cripple Creek, Colorado. Each castle is crafted with care, blending icy artistry and LED-lit magic to create a spectacle that has delighted millions across North America. Each towering, walk-through structure is made entirely of ice, weighs 20 million pounds, and covers approximately one acre in size.

The blend of icicle placement, temperatures, water volume, and wind results in an astonishing and ever-changing variety of ice formations. The icicles are fused together and sprayed with water to create a towering frozen fortress, expected to grow as tall as 20 feet high. To make the experience even more special, LED lights are frozen inside some of the ice, and at night, portions of the castle have lights that dance to the beat of music, adding a magical ambience to the breathtaking interactive sculptures. The experience is built using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand-placed by professional ice artists, creating breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, and fountains.

The decision to move to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds came after Ice Castles faced construction challenges at their previous Maple Grove location, compounded by unusually warm weather. CEO Kyle Standifird explained that the State Fairgrounds are centrally located, well-known, and have plenty of infrastructure to handle both construction and operational needs. Using about one acre of space at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, crews construct this winter’s attraction once the weather gets cold enough to do so. The event is hosted at 1750 Randall Avenue, just a couple of blocks off Snelling Avenue and north of the Grandstand.

Construction begins in November when organizers plan to start the building process, but Mother Nature ultimately calls the shots. The attraction generally opens sometime in early January and remains open until the end of February or the beginning of March, all heavily dependent on weather conditions. After last winter’s warm and generally snowless winter, hopes are high that this winter will be more friendly to the event. Each ice castle requires thousands of man-hours to create, making weather cooperation absolutely critical for success.

Visitors find frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, fountains, and much more built within the complex. The Minnesota Ice Castles location offers a tubing hill where visitors can grab a tube and cruise down a groomed snow path, plus a magical lantern passage and a polar pub for frosty alcoholic beverages. Meet a regal snow queen and a winter fairy at the Ice Castles, as Queen Everlight and Luna Frost create a magical atmosphere for all visitors. From mini doughnuts and pretzel bites to Nathan’s hotdogs and chili, there is no shortage of flavorsome treats at the Ice Castles.

Visitors generally take around 30 minutes to an hour exploring the Ice Castles, but many find themselves lingering longer in the enchanted environment. Race down exhilarating ice slides designed to bring out childlike joy, wander through shimmering ice caverns and archways where every twist reveals a new wonder, and adventure through crawl tunnels perfect for little adventurers and daring adults. Just as each snowflake is different, each Ice Castles location has its own unique look and amenities, with signature ice slides, sculptures, crawl tunnels and caverns.

Peak pricing ranges from $17 to $24, while off-peak pricing runs $12 to $17, with spots being limited and requiring advance reservations. Parking for this year’s event is offered for free, with the suggested entrance through Gate 3/Hoyt Gate. Since the Ice Castles is an outdoor attraction, experts recommend preparing for chilly weather by dressing in thermals and insulated attire, including ear muffs, gloves, scarves, and hats. Advanced tickets became available starting November 26, 2024.

This interactive ice experience is built using hundreds of thousands of icicles, hand-placed by professional ice artists, featuring breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, slides, and fountains that create the ultimate winter experience. The wintertime spectacle, featuring a variety of fanciful ice formations, has been held in previous locations in the Twin Cities, but this is its first year at the state fairgrounds. All features are contingent on the weather cooperating for crews to be able to construct them out of ice and for them to remain safe for visitors. The combination of artistry and engineering creates structures that seem to defy gravity and common sense.
