Los Angeles County — Prosecutors added severe child sex abuse charges against a youth soccer coach accused of raping and killing one of his 13-year-old players, opening the door to a possible death sentence.[1][2]

A Trusted Coach Turns Predator

Mario Edgardo Garcia-Aquino positioned himself as a mentor to young boys in the San Fernando Valley. He coached teams for the Hurricane Valley Boys Soccer Club out of Sylmar and frequented Whitsett Fields Park in North Hollywood.[3] Parents entrusted their children to him across different age groups. Yet investigators uncovered a pattern of exploitation targeting vulnerable teens.

Oscar “Omar” Hernandez, a 13-year-old player, left his home in Sun Valley on March 28, 2025. He headed to the Antelope Valley area to meet Garcia-Aquino, possibly to assist with soccer jerseys.[1] The boy never returned. His family reported him missing two days later. Authorities found his body days after in a ditch along a remote Ventura County road. The coroner later ruled the cause as acute alcohol poisoning.[3]

Escalating Charges Seal a Grim Fate

Garcia-Aquino initially faced murder charges in April 2025 for killing Hernandez during a lewd act.[3] Los Angeles County prosecutors amended the complaint on February 10, 2026. They filed nine new counts tied to repeated abuse of another player: eight for sodomy on a minor under 16 and one for oral copulation with a minor under 16.[1] These acts allegedly spanned September 2022 to July 2023.

The additions make Garcia-Aquino eligible for California’s death penalty. He pleaded not guilty during a downtown Los Angeles court appearance. A preliminary hearing looms on March 27, 2026. He remains in custody without bail.[2]

Pattern of Abuse Emerges

Investigators linked Garcia-Aquino to assaults beyond Hernandez. One teen endured abuse after staying overnight at the coach’s home, following introductions through soccer.[2] Another incident involved a 14-year-old on February 22, 2024. A separate 2022 case in Sylmar drew Los Angeles Police scrutiny.

Here is a timeline of known allegations:

  • September 2022 – July 2023: Ongoing abuse of one player.
  • December 2022: Rape of a child.
  • February 22, 2024: Assault on 14-year-old.
  • March 28, 2025: Hernandez murder.
  • February 10, 2026: Nine new charges filed.

Two surviving victims plan to testify. A prior Sheriff’s Department probe stalled amid a backlog of over 10,000 cases.[3] District Attorney Nathan Hochman reduced that number to about 4,000.

Immigration Roots and Official Outrage

Garcia-Aquino, 44, hailed from El Salvador as an undocumented migrant. He evaded detection upon entry and built a life coaching youth soccer.[1] The Department of Homeland Security highlighted his status in a statement.

Hernandez’s brother suggested the coach preyed on families lacking legal protections. DHS declared: “13-year-old Oscar ‘Omar’ Hernandez was an innocent child who was exploited and killed by this depraved illegal alien who should have never been in this country.”[2] Prosecutors uncovered fresh evidence to bolster the case.

Key Takeaways

  • Garcia-Aquino faces death penalty eligibility after new child sex charges.
