Visakhapatnam, April 28 – Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for the Google Cloud India AI Hub on Tuesday, ushering in a transformative era for the region’s technology landscape. The massive $15 billion project underscores Visakhapatnam’s emergence as a prime destination for data centers, according to Naidu’s remarks following the ceremony.[1][2] Spanning hundreds of acres near the city, the initiative promises to anchor India’s growing AI infrastructure amid global demand for advanced computing power.

A Monumental Scale for India’s First AI Hub

The Google Cloud India AI Hub represents one of the largest foreign direct investments in India’s history. Developers plan a 1-gigawatt hyperscale AI data center as the core facility, with ambitions to expand the ecosystem to 6.5 gigawatts over time.[2][3] Construction kicked off at Tarluvada in Visakhapatnam district, covering 601.4 acres across sites including Adavivaram and Rambilli.

Google’s subsidiary Raiden Infotech oversees the development, integrating the company’s full AI stack and consumer services. The hub will connect via new subsea cables, linking directly to international networks and enhancing India’s digital sovereignty.[4] Officials described the groundbreaking as a historic step, attended by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Google Cloud representatives.

Strategic Alliances Power the Project

A trio of industry giants drives the venture: Google, AdaniConneX, and Bharti Airtel’s Nxtra. Adani Infra handles key infrastructure elements, while Airtel contributes to the broader connectivity framework.[2][3] Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Digital, highlighted the scale, noting that the 1-gigawatt capacity rivals India’s current total data center footprint in a single location.[3]

Union Minister Vaishnaw emphasized sustainability efforts, calling for joint research on power efficiency under the India AI Mission and reduced water use through recycling. The partnerships align with Andhra Pradesh’s ‘Speed of Doing Business’ policy, streamlining approvals and infrastructure support.

Key Project Highlights:

  • Investment: $15 billion (₹1.35 lakh crore)[2]
  • Initial Capacity: 1 GW, expandable to 6.5 GW
  • Land Area: 601.4 acres across three sites
  • Partners: Google, AdaniConneX, Airtel Nxtra

Economic Ripple Effects for North Andhra

The AI hub stands to generate thousands of jobs in high-demand fields like artificial intelligence, cloud operations, cybersecurity, and data science. Allied sectors such as server manufacturing, cooling technologies, power systems, and networking will see influxes of investment, fostering a vibrant tech ecosystem.[4][3]

Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Vice Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, predicted massive commercial activity for Visakhapatnam. Laura Williams, U.S. Consul General in Hyderabad, praised the U.S.-India tech partnership, noting its potential to empower local innovators with world-class computing resources.[3] Naidu positioned the city as ideal due to its strategic location and supportive policies.

Toward a 2028 Milestone

Full inauguration of the Google Cloud India AI Hub is targeted for September 2028, after over two years of intensive construction. The timeline reflects careful planning to deliver cutting-edge infrastructure ready for global AI workloads.[1]

This project cements Visakhapatnam’s role in India’s digital surge, blending private ambition with government vision for sustained growth.
