Modena – A car-ramming and stabbing attack that wounded eight people in this northern Italian city has drawn sharp warnings from the interior minister about deeper problems of social distress and failed integration.
The incident occurred on Saturday when a 31-year-old Italian citizen of Moroccan descent drove into pedestrians before crashing into a shop window. Authorities identified the suspect as Salim El Koudri, who then used a knife to slightly wound a bystander before being subdued by passersby and arrested. Prosecutors charged him with massacre and aggravated injury, and a court decision on his detention was due later that day.
Attack Details Emerge
Officials described the suspect as university-educated and born in Italy, yet he had a documented history of mental health issues. He received treatment in 2022 for a schizoid personality disorder before discontinuing care. Local reports also noted an earlier email he sent to his university that contained insulting language toward Christians, though he later apologized for it.
Four of the victims remain in critical condition, including one woman whose injuries are considered life-threatening. The attack unfolded in a busy area, and two Egyptian migrants were among those who helped restrain the suspect, according to city officials.
Minister Points to Social Factors
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi ruled out terrorism as a motive but stressed that the case cannot be treated as the work of an isolated individual. In an interview with the newspaper Il Giornale, he described the assault as one of absolute gravity that raises profound questions about integration, identity and marginalization, especially among some second-generation immigrants.
“At this stage, there are no elements that correspond to the classic profile of a terrorist who plans violent actions,” Piantedosi said. “But all this cannot lead us to dismiss the attack as the act of an isolated madman.” He added that resentment linked to perceived discrimination may have played a role, though investigators continue to examine the full motive.
The minister also cautioned against reducing the episode solely to psychiatric factors. He argued that legal citizenship, education and formal status do not automatically ensure successful integration and that broader reflection on social and cultural fragilities is required.
Debate Intensifies Nationwide
The case has quickly become part of Italy’s ongoing political discussion over migration and security. Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini labeled the suspect a “second-generation criminal” and renewed calls for stricter controls. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani pushed back, noting that the man is an Italian citizen rather than a migrant, and planned a visit to Modena to meet the wounded.
Opposition figures accused some politicians of exploiting the tragedy, while Modena Mayor Massimo Mezzetti rejected generalizations about foreigners. Thousands of residents gathered in the city’s central Piazza Grande over the weekend to express solidarity with the victims.
