Parks Township, Pa. – A 34-year-old mother of three lost her life early Sunday morning when she attempted to intervene in a violent altercation outside a local bar.[1][2] Jessica Lynn Hilliard of Apollo became the victim of gunfire amid chaos in the parking lot of Niki’s Quick Six on First Street, leaving her family to grapple with profound loss. State police responded to reports of shots fired just after 1:15 a.m., discovering her body at the scene.[1]
The Altercation That Turned Deadly
The incident began as a verbal dispute between two women in the bar’s parking lot. One woman claimed she had been “jumped,” escalating the argument into a physical fight that drew in bystanders.[2] David James Dunmire, 36, of nearby Vandergrift, had arrived at the bar with his fiancée, who was involved in the confrontation.
As the brawl intensified, several people tried to separate the combatants. Tensions boiled over when Dunmire produced a 9 mm handgun and opened fire, striking multiple individuals.[2][3] Police later recovered evidence of seven shots discharged in the melee.
Hilliard’s Courageous Intervention
Jessica Hilliard spotted the fight and rushed to assist what she believed was a woman in danger. Her sisters later described the moment, noting that such selflessness defined her character.[4] “Our sister died a hero,” they said, emphasizing that she would have acted without hesitation to protect a stranger.[5]
A devoted mother to three children, Hilliard embodied the kind of everyday heroism that resonates deeply in tight-knit communities like Apollo and Parks Township. Her actions that night reflected a life dedicated to looking out for others, even at great personal risk.[6]
Four Victims Caught in the Crossfire
The shooting left four people wounded, with Hilliard succumbing to multiple gunshot wounds to the chest at the scene. The Armstrong County coroner ruled her death a homicide.[3]
- Rebecca Boston, 24, a bartender from McIntyre, suffered critical injuries and remains hospitalized.[2]
- Hector Saballos, 34, of Vandergrift, was shot while fleeing and is now in stable condition.[2]
- Dominik Dellach, 25, also of Vandergrift, sustained wounds but has stabilized.[1]
Dunmire reportedly shot Boston first, then targeted Saballos and Dellach as they ran, before turning the gun on Hilliard.[2]
Suspect Arrested Without Resistance
Dunmire remained at the scene after the shooting, where a local officer took him into custody without incident. Pennsylvania State Police quickly approved criminal homicide charges through Armstrong County District Attorney Katie Charlton.[1] He now faces one count of homicide, three counts of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering another person.[2]
The investigation continues, with state police piecing together witness accounts and evidence from the parking lot. Authorities have not released a motive beyond the initial dispute.
A Community Remembers a Hero
Hilliard’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her three children and cover memorial expenses, highlighting the ripple effects of her loss. Her sisters expressed that she “went out saving somebody else,” a sentiment echoed across local reports.[6]
In the wake of this tragedy, Parks Township confronts the fragility of a night out turning deadly. Hilliard’s story serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact one act of bravery can have, even as her loved ones navigate an unimaginable void. The community rallies, honoring a woman who chose compassion in the face of violence.
