Cambridge, Massachusetts – A State Police trooper and an armed civilian stopped a gunman who fired more than 60 rounds from an assault-style rifle along a busy stretch of Memorial Drive on Monday afternoon. The rapid intervention on the crowded roadway is credited with preventing what authorities described as a potential mass-casualty event. Two drivers suffered life-threatening wounds, and the suspect now faces charges after being treated for multiple gunshot injuries.

The Shooting Erupts on a Crowded Roadway

The gunfire began shortly after 1:30 p.m. between River Street and the Pleasant Street extension. Witnesses described the 46-year-old suspect walking down the middle of Memorial Drive and firing erratically at passing vehicles. At least a dozen cars were struck as drivers and passengers scrambled for cover. State Police Col. Christopher Ryan later confirmed that the man discharged between 50 and 60 rounds during the attack. The volume of fire and the location on a heavily traveled urban road raised immediate fears of widespread casualties.

Armed Responders Move Toward the Threat

As chaos spread, a State Police trooper and a nearby civilian, identified as a Marine veteran with a valid license to carry, advanced on the gunman. Both carried firearms and returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times in the extremities. Ryan recounted the sequence at a Monday evening news conference: “Both the trooper and the civilian fired their weapons, and that suspect was struck multiple times in the extremities.” Their actions ended the shooting before the gunman could continue along the roadway or target additional vehicles.

Victims and Suspect Receive Medical Care

Two men traveling in separate cars were hit by gunfire and remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The suspect, Tyler Brown of Boston, was taken into custody and is being treated at a Boston hospital for his wounds. Authorities have not released additional details about the victims’ conditions or the exact sequence of charges Brown will face. Investigators continue to examine the scene and interview witnesses to determine the gunman’s motive.

Quick Action Averts Greater Harm

Officials emphasized that the combined response from the trooper and the civilian likely spared many lives on a road filled with afternoon traffic. The incident unfolded in a matter of minutes, underscoring how rapidly trained individuals can interrupt an active shooter situation. Investigators are now piecing together the full timeline while the community absorbs the narrow escape on one of Cambridge’s busiest thoroughfares.
