More than two decades after cameras stopped rolling, a long-buried project has resurfaced and given Vidya Balan a chance to revisit one of her earliest collaborations. The actress recently watched the completed version of The Last Tenant for the first time since shooting it 25 years ago. What began as a routine Instagram update quickly turned into a quiet reflection on timing, lost chances, and the enduring presence of a co-star she deeply admired.
A Project That Nearly Disappeared
The film was written and directed by Sarthak Dasgupta and produced by Neena and Sarthak Dasgupta. It stars Vidya Balan and Irrfan Khan in the lead roles, supported by Annu Khandelwal, Saurabh Agarwal, Satish Kalra and Anand Mishra. The story centers on a troubled musician who takes shelter in an abandoned house before leaving the country.
After principal photography wrapped, the original footage went missing and the project was shelved. Years later, Dasgupta located a VHS copy that allowed the team to restore and complete the work. The restored film was released on YouTube on the anniversary of Irrfan Khan’s death and has already drawn roughly three lakh views.
Vidya Balan’s Unexpected Reunion With the Past
When the director texted her about the upcoming release, Balan had almost no memory of the shoot. She had deliberately set the experience aside during a difficult stretch in her career when several other projects, including her first Malayalam film Chakram, had also fallen through. Within days she found herself watching the finished cut and reconnecting with scenes she had not seen in a quarter century.
The experience brought back one clear moment from the set. Balan recalled phoning her sister Priya from the location to share the news that she was working with Irrfan Khan, then known for the television series Banegi Apni Baat. She described him as the most natural actor she had encountered at the time and noted that the same quality stood out again when she watched the film last week.
Regret Over Films That Never Happened
Balan has often spoken about the handful of projects that would have paired her with Irrfan again but never moved forward. In her post she acknowledged that those missed opportunities still sting. The release of The Last Tenant now stands as the only completed feature in which the two actors appear opposite each other.
She observed that Irrfan never struck a false note or tone in the restored footage. That consistency, she wrote, made the viewing both moving and bittersweet. The film serves as a small but tangible reminder of a creative partnership that ended far too soon.
What the Rediscovery Means Now
For audiences, the YouTube release offers a rare window into an earlier era of Indian cinema when both actors were still establishing themselves. For Balan, it has closed a small circle that had remained open for 25 years. The project that once felt like another disappointment now exists as a finished work and a quiet tribute.
Whether viewers discover the film for the first time or return to it because of the actors involved, the story behind its survival adds an extra layer of meaning. A single VHS tape preserved a performance that might otherwise have stayed lost, allowing new generations to see two performers at the start of their remarkable journeys.
